A WALKER'S GUIDE - CHICHESTER HARBOUR

A new book of walks in Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) was launched this week. The book 'A Walker's Guide - Chichester Harbour' features 12 long walks and seven shorter ideas for strolls. The book is presented in full colour with generous use of photographs. Each walk has clear directions, linked to a map and photos. Extra items of interest are included to give more background information on what to look out for.

The network of footpaths throughout the AONB gives access to some of the finest views in the area. Old oak trees line sections of the shoreline framing the view with their boughs. In other areas there are panoramic views up to the South Downs and across to the Isle of Wight. Inland, the peaceful paths cross through fertile farmland and through picturesque villages. With the terrain being so flat, the paths are accessible for most people.

Where possible all the walks start and finish at bus stops to encourage the use of sustainable transport in the AONB. Twelve longer walks range in length from 4 - 10 miles. These include routes in West Wittering, Dell Quay, Fishbourne, Chidham and Emsworth. A selection of shorter walks are ideal for those with wheelchairs, pushchairs or for those who just want a short stroll to a viewpoint and picnic place.

Ali Beckett who wrote the book for Chichester Harbour Conservancy said 'This selection of walks covers most parts of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Each one is a pleasure in its own right. I have tried to write it so it is almost impossible to get lost! For each walk there are clear and concise instructions. In addition photos are linked to points on a map to give added confidence that you are in the right place. I am indebted to a group of volunteers that have tried them all out.'

Production of the Walker's Guide has been funded by the Friends of Chichester Harbour and the Chichester Harbour Sustainable Development Fund. The Walker's Guide is on sale at: Harbour Office Itchenor, Chichester Tourist Office, Kim's Bookshop Chichester, Bookends Emsworth, Russell's Garden Centre Birdham, West Wittering Car Park and Four Seasons Country Store West Wittering for £4 a copy.
